Physiological Needs – 41- 60%

Appreciating Abundance

What you need to begin:

  • Time for a heartfelt reflection on the following.
  • A pen and paper may be helpful.

The Journey

1.An attitude of scarcity can never be fulfilled. An attitude of abundance is always fulfilled.

  • 23S1A: We have real needs, but when we approach life from a habitual perspective of what we lack, there will be no end to our wants and needs.
  • 23S1B:  An attitude of scarcity makes it more challenging to meet our fundamental needs because we tend to feel under-resourced to solve life’s challenges.
  • 23S1C: An attitude of abundance makes it much easier to access feelings of genuine contentment and belonging even in times of hardship because we know it’s not permanent.
  • 23S1D:  Like the seasons, there are natural cycles and rhythms in life. There are times of rain and drought, times of harvest, and times when we have to live on stored resources. Likewise, there are ups and downs.
  • 23S1E:  We can appreciate all of these as part of the natural rhythm, not as a sign of something fundamentally wrong with us or the world.
  • 23S1F:  An attitude of abundance also helps us meet our needs as we always feel there are resources and possibilities available to respond to life’s challenges.
  1. Abundance isn’t about how much you have. It’s about recognizing the inherent richness within you that is also reflected in the world.
  • 23S2A:  Your Authentic Self is truly like a bottomless well of resources, insight, connection, inspiration, and energy that can be drawn on to respond in ways that are uniquely appropriate to any and every situation you meet.
  • 23S2B: The Artificial Self can’t access natural abundance. Instead, it’s habituated to scarcity and lack.
  1. Provide for your outer and inner needs from the Treasury of Natural Abundance.
  • 23S3A: Meeting outer needs is about having enough. Meeting inner needs is about feeling you have enough.
  1. Outer Needs
  • 23S4A: Appreciating abundance is about what’s available, not what you have. It’s a quality of the natural generosity of reality, not a function of possessing or owning things.
  • 23S4B: Shifting your attitude gives you access to inner resources for pursuing outer needs and helps you recognize and access resources in the outer environment.
  • 23S4C: You can increase the resources available for meeting your outer needs because you can see possibilities you won’t notice if you’re focused on what’s lacking.
  1. Inner Needs
  • 23S5A: Even if your outer needs are met, without appreciation, you will always feel something is lacking.
  • 23S5B: Many people have an excess of material possessions beyond what they need, yet they don’t feel they have enough, because their inner needs are neglected. As a result, they can’t appreciate what they have.
  • 23S5C: This is an epidemic in the modern world, where even poor people generally have more material possessions than most human beings historically ever had. Yet, their basic needs aren’t met, and feelings of depression, loneliness, and lack of meaning are pervasive.
  • 23S5D: An attitude of abundance brings contentment even if you don’t seem to have a lot of possessions. As a result, you understand how to meet your inner needs.
  • 23S5E: You feel you have enough inwardly, and you are

better equipped to meet your outer needs.

  1. Practice intentional gratitude and appreciation.
  • 23S6A: Gratitude opens the door to abundance. You feel that what you have is enough, and the world becomes a more generous place.
  • 23S6B: Without gratitude, what you have is never enough, and the world becomes a place of scarcity.
  • 23S6C: The point here is that gratitude is not a result of having enough. Instead, it’s a conscious choice that causes contentment and unlocks generosity to increase your access to outer and inner resources.
  • 23S6D: You will never be able to appreciate what you have without being grateful first.
  • 23S6E: It’s a question of how you choose to direct your attention.
  1. Some additional questions you might ask relating to abundance are:
  • 23S7A: Where does the perception of scarcity come from? Is it an accurate reflection of my actual situation or a pre-existing habit that filters my experience?
  • 23S7B:  What are the unintended consequences of scarcity? Does it cause me to doubt people’s goodness and generosity before I can really know? Does it cause me to miss resources, opportunities, and possibilities because I’m not looking for them?
  • 23S7C:  What happens when I make a conscious choice to be grateful? Do I see people in a more positive light? Do I feel more joy? Do I see more possibilities, and am I willing to explore them? Am I more willing to ask for what I need?
  • 23S7D:  Do I feel more or less optimistic/pessimistic when I am consciously grateful for abundance, or reflexively fearful of scarcity?
  • 23S7E:  What prevents me from choosing gratitude and abundance all the time?
  • 23S7F:  What are some concrete actions that I can take, outwardly and inwardly, to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and abundance?
  1. Draw from the deep well of gratitude and abundance within and wake up to the abundance of the world.

Give yourself the gift of 15 minutes to practice gratitude.

  • 23S8A: Sit quietly with your eyes open. Take several deep breaths to settle yourself and come into the present.
  • 23S8B: Let your breath settle into a natural rhythm, and feel your body and the space of your environment for a few minutes.
  • 23S8C: Connect with your heart, the longing for connection, the joy of wishing well for yourself and others, the sadness of feeling incomplete.
  • 23S8D: Think of one thing you feel naturally grateful for. Then, let yourself feel gratitude as fully as possible in your heart and let the feeling permeate your body and mind.
  • 23S8E: Allow yourself to deeply appreciate this thing as a gift, not as something you can take credit for but as an expression of unearned generosity.
  • 23S8F: Now extend this feeling of gratitude out to your immediate physical environment. Whatever sights, sounds, etc. you notice, meet them with gratitude, even if they seem insignificant or challenging. Do the same for any thoughts, feelings, or physical sensations you have.
  • 23S8G: Be grateful for simply being alive, for the world, and being able to experience it.
  • 23S8H: The point here isn’t whether or not you have a long enough list of things to be grateful for, or whether gratitude is ‘justified’ or not.
  • 23S8I: The point is to tap into the innate quality of gratitude and generosity in you and consciously bring it forward into your life. That will transform your experience and open the door to inner and outer abundance.
  • 23S8J: Gratitude and generosity are two sides of the coin of abundance.

How to practice over time:

  • Do the practice of being in a state of gratitude (in Step 5).
  • Pay particular attention and be curious about the resistance you may have and the habits of thought, feeling, and behavior that make it difficult to connect with generosity and trust abundance.
  • You don’t need to try to overcome or banish them. Instead, simply noticing them will remind you that the door of gratitude is closed, and you can choose to open it.

Benefits of the practice:

You are inviting the energy of abundance into your life and transforming your perception by consciously and consistently choosing to be grateful. It’s like tapping into a vast underground aquifer of water. When you turn the water on, it may be just a small stream at first. But if you open it more often and let it stay open, it will flow out and fill a vast reservoir.

Your experience of abundance will increase in direct proportion to your experience of gratitude, because gratitude is simply a state of appreciating the abundant, natural generosity of the world.

The key to accessing this abundance is within you. It’s not a matter of mastering or conquering the world, or figuring out how to manipulate it to get what you want. It’s not a result of networking, marketing, salesmanship, or even hard work. Of course, we need to do our part to work with the gifts of abundance. But they are gifts.

The more you allow yourself to trust in abundance, the more you will live in collaboration with the world, not competition. Of course, you have to be an active participant, but your partner (the world) will always be there in endlessly changing forms in every situation you encounter. Things may not always, or ever, happen according to your plan, but relying on abundance will reveal that possibilities and pathways are always being offered.

You will operate less and less from a place of fear and struggle, and more from a place of relaxation and confidence.

You won’t waste your precious life energy pursuing endless outward achievements to find happiness and meaning because you will always be surrounded by abundance. When you do see the need to work towards outer objectives, whether for yourself or others, it will be to increase and share abundance, and you will be able to draw on the endless richness of the world to help accomplish your objectives.

24- Physiological Needs – 61-80% (Sai)

24- Joy as an Antidote to Suffering.

What you need to begin:

  • Time and space to reflect for 10 to 15 minutes.

Steps-

  1. Practicing unconditional joy can be a powerful way of working with so-called negative emotions.
  • 24S1A: Normally, we think of emotions like sadness, anger, loneliness, disappointment, bitterness, jealousy, and others as being in the way of happiness.

  • 24S1B: We assume that they’re in the way of experiencing joy and that we must overcome and dispose of them before we can experience joy.
  • 24S1C: We also assume we cannot experience joy without good things happening to us.
  • 24S1D: But true joy is both unconditional and innate. The only conditions it has are the ones we place on it. We decide we need a partner to be joyful, or that weekends are joyful and weekdays are joyless.
  • 24S1E: This exercise challenges you to truly claim agency over your own state of mind.
  • 24S1F: Instead of trying to manipulate or fix your emotions and clear them out of the way to experience joy, try doing the following.
  • 24S1G: Access the unconditional joy that is innate within you.
  • Apply the innate joy directly to your negative emotions like a healing ointment.

This is NOT toxic positivity

  • 24S2A: You are not being encouraged to pretend you are happy, or just cheer up, or think positive.
  • 24S2B: You are not being encouraged to spiritually or emotionally bypass your negative emotions.
  • 24S2C: It is essential to fully acknowledge and honor your hurt in order to meet it with joy.
  • 24S2D: This an intimate journey of self-healing,
  • 24S2E: That requires honesty, sensitivity, self-compassion, and the willingness to grow.
  • 24S2F: However, it is based on a radical conviction in your fundamental wholeness and health rather than focusing and defining you by your woundedness.
  • 24S2G: Instead of making a long journey through brokenness back to health, this practice leaps directly into your fundamental sanity and invokes it to heal what needs to be healed.
  • Before you begin:
  • 24S3A: Whenever you encounter a difficult situation, such as a conflict, set back, difficult person, or any circumstance that brings up negative emotions that overtake your mind so much that you feel resistance to even the idea of being joyful, this is the perfect opportunity to practice intentional joy.
  • 24S3B: If you are familiar enough with the practice or if your emotional state is not too extreme, you may be able to do it in the middle of your activities.
  • 24S3C: If not, try to take a break to give yourself 10 to 15 minutes for personal reflection. You could also come back to it later when you have the time to be alone.
  • Begin by getting in touch with genuine joyfulness as wholeheartedly as you are able.
  • 24S4A: Due to the nature of this practice, the feelings of resistance will naturally be very strong, and that’s okay. Because that’s the point.
  • 24S4B:  Be very gentle but steady in rousing your connection to joy inwardly.
  • 24S4C: Notice the resistance in your body, be curious about it. Talk to it inwardly like a doctor or nurse might talk to a patient to comfort them.
  • 24S4D: Get a feel for the emotional content.
  • 24S4E: Let joy touch the resistance and release just a bit. Notice the pain underneath the resistance.
  • 24S4F: It may be a little bit like putting ointment on an open wound. You may pull away but you know it will help you heal.
  • 24S4G: There’s a moment of pulling away and then a moment of releasing, a moment of trust.
  • 24S4H: In that moment of trust, allow the feeling of joy to shine just a little bit brighter, like sunlight peaking through clouds.
  1. Don’t try to make the negative feelings go away.
  • 24S5A: The main point is to see that you can actually fully experience authentic, uncontrived joy even when you are suffering. Your negative emotions are not a threat to joy.
  • 24S5B: But they may be threatened by joy and we may be too, if we are identified with those feelings more strongly than with joy.

  • 24S5C: So, we actively (but unconsciously) resist being joyful.

  • 24S5D: The point is to see that and become conscious of it. When you do, you can allow the joy to be present with the pain like comforting a dear friend.

  • 24S5E: Slowly, the hurt and resistance will release and give way to joy. In the process, you will learn a lot about yourself and your hurt and how you really need to care for yourself.

6- Continue this process for as long as you need to or as long as you can.

  • 24S6A: As you bring the session to a close, move on to the later stages of the intentional joy routine—gratitude, rejoicing, celebrating others’ good fortune, and wishing them healing and joy.
  • 24S6B: The only difference between the basic practice of intentional joy and this is that here you are focusing on working with the resistance.
  • 24S6C: Get some experience working with resistance in the basic practice of intentional joy first before Applying Joy as an Antidote.

7- Don’t worry if you don’t experience full resolution in one session.

  • 24S7A: That’s not the point. There’s no aggression in this practice at all, there’s no need to force anything.
  • 24S7B: You’re simply bringing the experience of joy into contact with the real pain you encounter in life as a healing presence.
  • 24S7C: In doing so, you are opening much more of your life up for the experience of joy and allowing it to take a much larger role in your life. You are opening up the possibility to truly live with unconditional joy.
  • 24S7D: Sometimes, resistance and pain will release and transform into joy, sometimes they will just coexist like clouds and the sky.

How to practice over time:

  • In the beginning, you may need to withdraw from whatever situation is provoking your negative emotions in order to give this practice your full attention. It’s recommended that you do so.

  • Give yourself as long as it takes or as long as you have. It should be at least 5 minutes, and not usually more than 10 to 15 minutes.
  • As you become more familiar with this practice, you will be able to do it more frequently in the midst of whatever is going on. Even then, you may find it helpful to return later to reflect more on it. This can be helpful for learning more from what happened and for complete healing.
  • Eventually, it will just become part of how you live on a daily basis, sometimes in formal sessions, sometimes on the go.

Benefits of this exercise:

This exercise will help you make peace with yourself and integrate your wounded parts so that you are not divided against yourself. It will help you increase the presence of joy in your life and gain greater access to unconditional joy. You will become more confident that joy is part of your essential nature and that it is a powerful force for healing and wellbeing. This is liberating and empowering. You will learn that joy and pain can share the same space without conflict. Learning how this applies to you will help you bring this truth to others who are suffering by sharing joy with them through gentle confidence.

This exercise focuses on joy as a source of healing and empowerment to help you overcome the limiting focus on self-gratification and transition into higher levels of self-actualization by orienting towards service to others.

This is not done through self-sacrifice by placing others’ interests before your own. Rather, it is done through radical self-care that recognizes that your interests and that of others are not in competition. It shows that they are in harmony.

Being joyfully present as your authentic self simultaneously accomplishes the genuine benefit (the gift of) yourself to others.

When you are tempted to give in to the influence of negative emotions that may cause harm to yourself and others, you will be better able to hold a perspective of lightness and humor, and allow the presence of joy to reveal possibilities for more constructive outcomes.

8- Self-Esteem- 41-60%

8- Rejoicing in Goodness: Accessing the Power of Celebration (Khushi)

  • What you need to begin:
  • Time and space to reflect.
  • Steps-

1- Take some time out, settle your mind, and give yourself an opportunity to appreciate the goodness of life.

  • 08S1A: Sit quietly for a few minutes.
  • 08S1B: Let go of whatever has been happening.
  • 08S1C: Breathe gently and give your attention to your breath.
  • 08S1D: With each breath, release a little bit of tension, worry, and whatever sense of wrongness you may be carrying.
  • 08S1E: Appreciate that you can take this time to celebrate and reflect on goodness. Make the most of it!

2- To recognize the natural connection between goodness and celebration,

Reflect on these questions:

  • 08S2A: How do you feel when you experience something beautiful? How does it feel to hear a story of generosity or compassion? How does your being respond to experiencing a moment of meaningful connection?
  • 08S2B: How do you feel when you accomplish a task, small or large?
  • 08S2C:How do you feel when you look at a baby, or when you hear about a loved one’s success or good fortune?
  • 08S2D: How do you feel when you hear about someone recovering from an illness, or even family members reuniting for the last moments with a loved one just before they pass away?

08S2E: How do you feel when you make a change for the better in your life? How           does it feel to stop doing something that is holding you back or start a new behavior that opens a path to health and flourishing?

  • 08S2F: Goodness is the same whether it happens to us or someone else; joyfulness and celebration are the natural response.
  • 08S2G: Usually, we don’t pay that much attention to these feelings or what produces them. We just enjoy them while they last, and before we know it, they’re gone.
  • 08S2H: But you can cultivate joy intentionally. By bringing your full attention to these moments and celebrating them, you can unlock the potential for positive growth that usually goes unrecognized within them.
  • 08S2I: Through the practice of intentional rejoicing, you can take advantage of these opportunities rather than just passively watching them come and go, perhaps without even noticing.

3- Begin to practice intentional joyfulness.

Think of something that naturally brings you joy.

  • 08S3A: Once you are in touch with the feeling of joy, let go of the circumstances around it and focus on its innate quality itself.

  • 08S3B: Let yourself rest in it, like sitting in the shade of a tree. Stay with the feeling.

  • 08S3C: Let it fill your body. Let it spread to your face and heart.

  • 08S3D: Feel it softening the tension. Feel it inviting a frown to become a smile.

  • 08S3E: If you notice resistance in the form of fear, anger, stress, blame, anxiety, judgment, and jealousy—don’t fight it. Just let the joy gently touch it.

  • 08S3F: Let it release a little bit and as it transforms into joy.
  • 08S3G: Be grateful! Gratitude multiplies the experience of joy. By adding gratitude to your practice of joyfulness, you can let it grow organically.
  • 08S3H: Let the feeling of joy and gratitude fill your body, mind, and heart.

  • 08S3I: If you can, let your heart be full to the point of wanting to shed tears of joy and gratitude.
  • 08S3J: Take a few minutes to truly celebrate the experience of joyfulness and the relief it provides, like a gentle breeze on a hot day or like the sun breaking through dark clouds.

4- Recognize this as the joy of your own basic goodness.

Rejoice in it!

  • 08S4A: This natural, spontaneous joy is more fulfilling and satisfying than pleasure from outside.

  • 08S4B: It isn’t dependent on external conditions although outer events can help put you in touch with it.

  • 08S4C: It’s already within you, and you can connect with it anytime!

  • 08S4D: Make a wish—commit to doing things that bring you more in touch with the natural joy of your Authentic Self, and giving less time to things that take you away from it.
  • 08S4E: When you allow yourself to experience joy in this way, not just as a mental state or an emotion, but as a physical sensation that fills and touches every part of your body.
  • 8S4F: It relieves stress, tension, anxiety, fear, and other negative states that are held in the body.
  • 8S4G: Joy restores vitality and basic sense of health, wellbeing, and enthusiasm for life.
  • 8S4H: Instead of being cut off, it opens you to the free flow of life’s energy in your body and with the world at a cellular level. Joy is naturally wholesome and selfless; it wants to be spread and shared.
  • 8S4I: If you follow true joy—not pleasure or desire—it will naturally lead you to expressing your inherent goodness in ways that are beneficial to you and others.
  • 8S4J: Let joy lead you out of harmful behaviors and into helpful ones without struggle, guilt, or judgment.

5- Here are some important things to remember as you grow in your practice of rejoicing.

Rejoicing in others’ good fortune:

  • 8S5A: It allows you to access a limitless source of joy. There are so many more opportunities to recognize and celebrate goodness if you make a point to include other people in your practice instead of only rejoicing in your own good fortune.
  • 8S5B: Instead of waiting for something good to happen to you, there are endless opportunities coming to you all the time.
  • 8S5C: This will also be an antidote to jealousy and cynicism which can have a very harmful effect on your own happiness and peace of mind as well as your relationships with others.
  • 8S5D: You can find joy in the world, but you can also find it within yourself.
  • 8S5E: You can make a conscious practice of looking for such things and rejoicing in them.
  • 8S5F: This practice is transformative and powerful as you will find countless opportunities to connect with joy.
  • 8S5G: But also, joy is not dependent on outer circumstances. These events aren’t the causes of joy, they only bring you in touch with the joy that is naturally within you.

  • 8S5H: You don’t have to wait for a reason to justify joy! You have an innate capacity for joy that can be developed limitlessly.
  • 8S5I: Use every opportunity life gives you to connect with joy, but also practice “intentional joy” without a cause, where you are consciously bringing joy into your life and the world instead of waiting for it to come to you.

How to practice over time

  • Repeat this exercise once a day, if possible, for the next several weeks.

  • In between formal sessions, pay attention to things that bring you natural joy and try to take a little time to do a short version of this practice. Do these examinations:
    • Look for common factors in the circumstances that tend to bring you joy.
    • See if the nature of joy is the same or different in different situations, or is joy itself the same regardless of the circumstances that cause it.
    • Does joy come from the thing or from within you?
    • What prevents you from experiencing more joy? What is stopping you from being joyful as often and as much as you’d like—from being intentionally joyful?
  • Make a wish to discover the common thread that runs through all the situations that produce joy and make a strong wish to bring that thread into as many activities as you can.
  • For moving beyond harmful patterns that separate you from your True Self and into wholesome behaviors that express and connect you with your basic goodness, use this exercise. When used properly, regret and rejoicing are like wings of a bird that allow you to fly into the sky of wellbeing and self-actualization.

Benefits of this exercise:

This exercise will allow you to find endless sources of joy in your life and ultimately the real source of joy within yourself. As you take further advantage of these opportunities, joy will naturally grow and begin to overshadow negative states spontaneously. When you begin to practice unconditional joy, you will become a source of joy for others rather than being dependent on others for it. This will empower you to have greater mastery and freedom in your journey of self-actualization and establish a solid foundation for genuine, healthy self-esteem that is unconditional. It will improve your health and wellbeing, both physically and psychologically.

You are making a powerful shift towards self-determination and genuine inner fulfillment that is not dependent on outer conditions.

19- Safety Needs – 61-80% (Lakshay)

19- Extending Safety

What you need to begin:

  • Time for a heartfelt reflection on the following.
  • A willingness to serve others without attachment to your desired outcome.
  • A pen and paper may be helpful.

The Journey

  • One of the greatest forms of generosity is protection from fear.

Everyone wants to be free from fear.

  • 19S1A: We all need a foundation of safety to support basic wellbeing and higher levels of flourishing.
  • 19S1B: In the early stages of providing for your Safety Needs, it’s natural to be motivated by one’s own safety and that of your loved ones.
  • 19S1C: At this stage, your safety needs are largely fulfilled. This is true, intrinsic wealth. With an attitude of generosity, you can apply this wealth in service to others rather than merely for self-preservation.
  • 19S1D: For those who live in fear, there is no greater gift than

freedom from fear.

  • 19S1E: Like any form of wealth, you can extend the wealth of safety to others, even people you don’t know, by Serving Others and Serving Yourself simultaneously.
  • The wealth of safety serves a greater purpose when you extend it to others.
  • 19S2A: Like any other kind of wealth, if you only use it to insulate yourself for personal comfort, safety won’t fulfill its full purpose and can even prevent further growth.
  • 19S2B: It can lead to stagnation by separating you from your environment. As you lose touch with the conditions of the world and people around you, you also lose touch with your own Authentic Self.
  • 19S2C: You can extend a life of dignity and freedom from fear to others by helping them meet their basic Safety Needs.
  • 19S2D: Transforming the narrow motivation of self-preservation into an attitude of selfless generosity and service to others will ensure that your fortunate life circumstances serve their true purpose as a foundation for higher development by meeting the outer and inner needs of yourself and others simultaneously.
  • Let’s start by cultivating an attitude of widening your circle of care and protection.
  • 19S3A: Sit quietly without distractions. Your eyes can be open or closed. Bring your attention to your breath for a few minutes to focus your mind.
  • 19S3B: Think of your loved ones and connect with the natural wish for them to be happy, safe, and free from fear. Imagine them experiencing the anxiety of feeling unsafe. Repeat this phrase several times (silently or out loudly) for a few minutes:
  • 19S3C: May everyone I love be safe and free from fear.
  1. Now, think of more distant acquaintances and imagine people you don’t know as well.
  • 19S4A: Imagine them suffering inwardly with anxiety and fear, and outwardly from various threats and insecurities. Consider that they are just as important and have as much right to safety as you and your loved ones.
  • 19S4B: Let yourself imagine how you would feel about them if they were your child, friend, or family member. They may be distant and unknown to you, but they are real people with real needs.
  • 19S4C: Now, repeat this phrase several times for a couple of minutes:
  • 19S4D: May everyone I know and don’t know be safe and free from fear.

  1. Now, think of people you consider threatening or dangerous in some way (not just physically but verbally and emotionally too). Think of both people you may know and don’t know.
  • 19S5A: Think of the outer conditions that may have shaped their character and the inner conditions they experience that cause them to act dangerously toward others.
  • 19S5B: What kind of threats and violations might they have endured in the past or be living with now?
  • 19S5C: Again, imagine how you would feel if they were a close loved one, and repeat this phrase:
  • 19S5D: May everyone who is a threat to others be safe and free from fear. May they be free from outer and inner conditions that cause them to act harmfully. May they experience peace and love, and feel the freedom and ease to be peaceful and loving towards others.
  1. Finish by contemplating this thought for a few minutes:
  • 19S6A: May everyone feel loved. May they be safe and free from fear. May they be free from experiences that make them feel threatened, and act as a threat to others.
  • 19S6B: May I hold this wish and find ways to express it in my actions that don’t make people feel threatened, but ease their anxiety and help them feel safe.
  • 19S6C: May my actions, large or small, contribute to an environment of safety that pacifies threats and encourages people to feel at ease and be kind to one another.

How to practice it over time:

  • Look for ways to bring this wish into action. Of course, you’re not going to do it by yourself and it may seem completely unrealistic. But that’s not the point.
  • Actions flow from intentions. If you’re willing to hold such a powerful and beautiful intention, there is no doubt that powerful and beautiful actions will flow from it.
  • This intention is inspired by an awareness of interdependence that comes from your Authentic Self. Gradually coming into integrity with this intention will transform your actions, and you may discover things that seemed unrealistic or even impossible become possible.
  • Safety is a Community. Look for ways to connect, recruit, and work together with other people.
  • The attitude is the key. It’s A State of Being First, Not Doing. You don’t need to be a security expert or a community organizer to be able to make people around you feel safe.
  • By applying your Attention and Listening to others with this intention in your heart, you will learn what is needed and how you might contribute. You will also discover resources and people who share your intention.
  • Big results come from the accumulation of small actions, and even the smallest actions count. As long as you find ways to express this intention, you are contributing to a safer world, not a more dangerous one.

Benefits of this exercise:

You’re not going to protect every person through your efforts alone, or by the power of your intention. But if you cultivate a heart that wants to protect others, you will undoubtedly be helping to extend safety to a wider circle of people and contribute to a safer world.

Everything happens through the power of intention, whether you are conscious of it or not. Conscious intentions are more powerful than unconscious ones to influence the world in a sustained way. If you are willing to hold and serve the vision of extending safety to others, such a world will begin to reveal itself initially as possibilities. And as you serve those possibilities, it will begin to emerge as a reality.

Nothing but good can come from this. Let go of attachment to the outcome. You are integrating all the levels of your being and all the aspects of your life into the journey of Self-Actualization and service, a journey of endless discovery guided by what you ask, not what you know. Going forward from here is more about awakening and unfolding the qualities and innate wisdom of your True Self, rather than finding answers from outside. This is how you will Extend Safety.

11- Love & Belonging – 0-20%(Sai)

 11- The Power of Relationships

What you need to begin:

  • Time for a heartfelt reflection on the following.
  • A pen and paper may be helpful.

Steps

  • A strong sense of Love & Belonging is rooted in relationships with intrinsic value.
  • 11S1A: The quality of your relationships, not quantity, determines your sense of Love & Belonging.
  • 11S1B: Although relationships are external by nature, if they have intrinsic value, they support internal health and flourishing.
  • 11S1C: Extrinsic relationships tend to be superficial and often transactional. Their value is based on what we get from them and how they contribute to our outer circumstances.
  • 11S1D: Intrinsic relationships are valuable in themselves for the feelings of love and connection we receive from them. Being authentic and non-transactional, they are an end in themselves.
  • 11S1E: Work and professional, as well as casual social relationships, tend to be extrinsic. On the other hand, family and sincere personal friendships tend to be intrinsic.
  • 11S1F: But these aren’t strict categories; relationships exist along a spectrum. They’re not permanent or unchanging and can become more or less intrinsic/extrinsic if we nurture or neglect them.
  • You have the power to cultivate the kind of relationships you want.
  • 11S2A: One question is essential to ask for a genuinely satisfying life of growth and purpose: What do you truly want?
  • 11S2B: Is it important to you to have a strong sense of love and belonging in your relationships?
  • 11S2C: To cultivate a rich harvest of love and belonging from the garden of your relationships, you need to focus on one simple thing: increasing the abundance of intrinsic values in your relationships.
  • 11S2D: You can do this in two ways:

1) Focusing more on relationships with intrinsic value and less on extrinsically-based relationships.

  • 11S2E: 2)Nurturing intrinsic value in any relationships that have the potential to become more meaningful and authentic.
  • But first, let’s take a closer look at the qualities and differences between intrinsic and extrinsic relationships.
  • 11S3A: Extrinsic Relationships- Meet superficial needs and desires without contributing to deeper satisfaction. They may even feel shallow, unreliable, and untrustworthy.

  • 11S3B: They may serve a practical purpose but in a very conditional, transactional way.
  • 11S3C: They lack personal loyalty, connection, and care. There is no sense of greater community, and the relationship is limited to the specific context or transaction.
  • 11S3D: There is very little room for Authentic Communication. Without sincere attention and listening, they don’t support personal growth or deepening connection. They are a means to an end, not an end in itself.
  • 11S3E: Intrinsic Relationships- Meet deeper, universal human needs. They are based on trust, intimacy, and genuine connection.
  • 11S3F: They are unconditional and can often be relied on to meet practical needs in a non-transactional way because there is genuine care for mutual wellbeing that goes beyond a narrow context or transaction.
  • 11S3G: They have an ongoing sense of community as a source of nourishment, care, and protection that supports practical, physical, and emotional wellbeing, as well as the higher needs for Love & Belonging, Self-Esteem, and Self-Actualization.

4- It’s not the context but the quality of the relationship that matters.

  • 11S4A: Personal, familial, and even romantic relationships can be reduced to serving external purposes, lacking intimacy, trust, or connection. They can prevent, rather than support, physical/emotional health, personal growth, Self-Esteem, and Self-Actualization.
  • 11S4B: Work and business relationships don’t have to be limited to transactional exchanges. On the contrary, with deeper humanity at their core, they foster collaboration, cooperation, and community-building, instead of competition and exploitation.
  • 11S4C: They seek the success of all parties rather than creating winners and losers. Concerned with the development and care of the whole human being, they serve a greater purpose than just making money and use business as a vehicle to create cultures that support human flourishing.

5- Now, take inventory of purpose in your relationships.

  • 11S5A: Bring to mind any relationship that is significant to you for some reason. It could be a friend or family member, work/business or social, new or old, distant or close.
  • 11S5B: How do you feel when you think about this person and relationship?
  • 11S5C: Are your feelings based on hopes and fears about what you might gain or lose?
  • 11S5D: Is the relationship based on what you get (or might get) from one another (is it transactional)?
  • 11S5E: Would the relationship continue even if there was no outer benefit for either of you?
  • 11S5F: Do you feel grateful for this relationship regardless of any outer benefit?
  • 11S5G: After contemplating these questions, would you consider the relationship primarily extrinsic (transactional, material) or intrinsic (honoring your mutual humanity)?
  • 11S5H: To simplify things, give a score between 1-10, 10 being very intrinsic and 1 very extrinsic.
  • 11S5I: Do the same exercise with other significant relationships, starting with the ones that impact your life most.

6- Now, consider whether you can improve the quality of individual relationships by increasing their intrinsic value.

  • 11S6A: Include relationships with high and low scores. Intrinsic relationships can become more fulfilling and meaningful. Many extrinsic relationships can become more intrinsic with intention and care.
  • 11S6B: Ask yourself if a relationship has more potential for authentic human connection.
  • 11S6C: What are the factors that may have prevented that? Is intrinsic potential limited by characteristics in the other person or yourself, or is it in the relationship dynamic itself?
  • 11S6D: Perhaps circumstances around the relationship seem to limit what is possible. For instance, family, social, or workplace dynamics may restrict opportunities for a deeper connection.

7- Make a conscious decision to prioritize intrinsic value in all your relationships.

  • 11S7A: As much as possible, shift the focus of your time and energy to relationships that already have intrinsic value and improve relationships with the potential for more meaningful, authentic connections.
  • 11S7B: If a relationship is both very extrinsic and has little potential to become more authentic, consider letting it go or at least reducing its impact on your life to only what is necessary.
  • 11S7C: But, be careful. Refrain from dismissing people simply because they are not meeting your needs. That would be a transactional attitude. Intrinsic value comes from the quality of the human connection, not what you get from it.

  • 11S7D: Sometimes you may receive more and other times, and you may have more to give. Relationships are mutually rewarding and fulfilling because of the quality of care and attention in them, not who benefits. That can change with time and circumstance.

How to practice over time:

  • The purpose of this exercise is simply to take inventory, and to identify the balance of intrinsic/extrinsic relationships in your life.
  • Do this exercise every few weeks or months to gradually shift your perspective to consistently evaluating your relationships in terms of their intrinsic value. The exercise can also help you increase your awareness of how your relationships impact your general wellbeing.
  • You can also apply it to individual relationships, new or old, to evaluate their current status, potential, and how they may change over time.

Benefits of this exercise:

First, by better understanding the elements that make relationships intrinsically rewarding, you can introduce or strengthen those elements. This can make good relationships even more fulfilling and bring greater depth and connection to currently extrinsic relationships.

Second, acknowledging a relationship with seemingly little possibility of becoming more meaningful will free you to focus your attention where there is more potential for healthy growth.

Love & Belonging is essential for genuine wellbeing, Self-Esteem, and Self-Actualization. It’s also an important aspect of meeting your more basic Physiological and Safety Needs.

Love & Belonging is a function of community; it’s not something you can do by yourself. But you can take an active part in cultivating a healthy environment of genuine care that supports healthy growth.

It’s like plants that thrive in a rich and flourishing ecosystem, an interconnected web of life. All individual plants do much better in such an environment than they would on their own, and each plays a part in contributing to the strength of the whole.

This exercise will help you create a robust ecosystem of mutually beneficial relationships that nurture your wellbeing and the flourishing of others—both outwardly and inwardly.

22- Physiological Needs – 21- 40%

22- Balancing Outer and Inner Needs – The Foundation of a Healthy Life

What you need to begin:

  • Alone time to yourself for reflection.

The Journey

  • When our basic outer needs are met, we can devote less of our life energy to pursuing them and more to fulfilling our inner needs.

  • 22S1A: This is the basic premise of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

  • 22S1B: Much human suffering comes from not understanding this statement. By pursuing more than we need, we create suffering for ourselves and others.

  • 22S1C: We suffer by trying to meet inner needs with outer things, exhausting ourselves and neglecting those inner needs.

  • 22S1D: Others suffer through the imbalance created by consuming and accumulating with no limit. Some people have more than they need while others can’t meet their basic needs, resulting in all kinds of social ills.
  • 22S1E: What are our outer and inner needs?

We need air, food, and water to sustain our body. We need clothing and shelter to protect us from the extremes of the elements. We need sleep for our body and nervous system to restore itself.

  • 22S1F: With the exception of sleep, these are external conditions that meet basic survival needs, and good sleep also depends on a restful environment.

  • 22S1G: The nervous system is like the bridge between body and mind. A healthy nervous system requires a balance of outer and inner conditions.

  • 22S1H: When basic physical needs aren’t met, the nervous system can’t function properly, leading to poor physical and mental health.

+

  • 22S1I: Despite the fulfillment of basic needs, if inner needs are neglected, the nervous system will still be imbalanced. This can negatively affect physical and mental health.

  • 22S1J: Inner needs are things like the need to feel safe (not just to be safe), as well as the need for connection, meaning, authenticity, integrity, creativity, and more. These are the seeds of Love & Belonging, Self-Esteem, and Self-Actualization.

2- Learning to regulate your nervous system is an integral part of tending to your inner needs and an essential foundation for experiencing inner peace and wellbeing.

Once outer needs are met, shift your attention to

meeting our inner needs.

  • 22S2A: Material objects contribute to wellbeing by meeting essential needs. However, once basic needs for health, safety, and proper functioning of the body/nervous system are met, material objects alone don’t increase wellbeing any further. This is because they’re not capable of meeting our inner needs.

  • 22S2B: Research shows that accumulating material possessions beyond what is required to meet basic needs doesn’t contribute to happiness or wellbeing, and can actually have the opposite effect.

3- Why do so many of us devote our lives to pursuing more than we need even though it doesn’t make us happier?

  • 22S3A: The short answer is social conditioning.

  • 22S3B: We make the mistake of pursuing outer conditions to meet inner needs because we’re confused about outer and inner needs and how to meet them.
  • 22S3C: We’re also confused about the difference between needs and desires.
  • 22S3D:What is the difference between needs and desires?
  • 22S3E: Intellectually, we understand the difference between needing a functioning car to get to work and wanting a more expensive car for fun, comfort, or prestige.

  • 22S3F: But in practice, we live as if meeting our desire for a fancier car, a bigger house, more food, the right phone, clothes, or a dream vacation will make us happy.
  • 22S3G: It doesn’t. Fulfilling a desire gives us a short-term sensation of pleasure. But once that wears off, it does nothing to meet any real need. In fact, it leaves us craving for more.
  • 22S3H: This fuels addiction which is why addictions of all kinds (besides the obvious ones of drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes) are so widespread in modern society. A few of these addictions are food, shopping, sex, gaming, digital media, money, status, power, etc.
  • 22S3I: Substituting pleasure for genuine fulfillment leaves us feeling empty. If we don’t know how to connect with our Authentic Self, we get stuck in a cycle of pleasure-seeking. Learning to Transform Regret can help break the cycle of addictive/compulsive behavior and bring you back to Authenticity.
  • 22S3J: To understand more about how to meet your inner needs, which are the true source of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment, it’s essential to understand the difference between extrinsic values and intrinsic values.

4- Now that you’re clear about the difference between outer and inner needs, let’s explore their relationship more closely.

Outer and inner conditions are both critical to

a healthy life with meaning and purpose.

  • 22S4A: Besides fulfilling basic survival needs, outer conditions are essential to health and flourishing when we see them from the proper perspective.
  • 22S4B: External factors with extrinsic value take us away from our True Self and fuel addiction. But external factors with intrinsic value create a healthy relationship with the external environment that supports wellbeing and Self-Actualization.
  • 22S4C: Outer and inner conditions are interdependent;

they support one another.

Balancing outer and inner needs is essential to a healthy, meaningful life.

  • 22S4D: Although Self-Esteem and Self-Actualization depend highly on self-reliance and taking personal responsibility for one’s wellbeing, the truth is, internal health (mental and physical) also depends on a supportive and nurturing environment.
  • 22S4E: You can’t separate yourself from your environment and focus only on yourself to become healthy and fulfilled.
  • 22S4F: Despite a dominant cultural belief in self-reliance and personal responsibility, even basic Physiological and Safety Needs are primarily dependent on your external environment and caring, supportive relationships.
  • 22S4G: The truth is that outer and inner conditions are a continuum. Finding the right balance is the key. This is the real meaning of community.
  • 22S4H: The right relationship with the outer environment is based on cultivating external factors with intrinsic value
  • 22S4I: Nurturing authentic connections in human relationships and pursuing outer conditions in a balanced way to meet real needs creates a living connection with the external world.
  • 22S4J: In contrast, external factors with extrinsic value will always remain outside you and create disconnection.

5- Look for the right balance between self-reliance and interdependence.

It’s like tending a garden.

  • 22S5A: A healthy garden or ecosystem supports the health and flourishing of the plants and animals within it.
  • 22S5B: It’s a dynamic process that depends on the contributions of soil, air, water, sun, and all the plants and animals within it.
  • 22S5C: When we’re focused mainly on what we want and what we can get, we exploit people and the environment, creating a hostile, competitive environment.
  • 22S5D: In the right relationship, we don’t take more than we need and we care as much about what we can give to support the community’s health as what we can get.
  • 22S5E: In such an environment, it’s much easier to meet our needs and enjoy an abundance beyond minimal survival needs. A natural surplus will provide a richer quality of life for ourselves and others. Outer and inner needs will both be met naturally.
  • 22S5F: When the environment is not depleted by exploitation, there is an abundance of healthy, collaborative relationships that provide for basic needs and nourish inner wellbeing through Love & Belonging with meaningful connection.
  • 22S5G: But perhaps, more importantly, you will be able to appreciate and take advantage of the conditions that truly nurture genuine wellbeing, because you will be free from the two mistaken extremes of:
    • Seeking happiness from external things, and
    • Seeking happiness through false independence and self-reliance.
  • 22S5H: When you care for others and nurture a healthy environment of abundance instead of taking more than you need, you will naturally receive all you need… and more.

How to practice over time:

  • Balancing outer and inner needs is not a one-time thing. It’s not static but a dynamic, evolving practice. As circumstances change, so will your needs, sometimes requiring more focus on the outer, and other times on the inner; sometimes on what you need, and others on what you can give—sometimes emphasizing self-reliance, other times interdependence.
  • Read and contemplate this exercise several times until familiar with the concepts.  Return to it from time to time to remind yourself and go deeper.
  • Key concepts to get clear about are:
    • Outer/inner needs
    • Needs/wants (desires)
    • Self-reliance/interdependence
    • Extrinsic/intrinsic values
    • Self-regulating your nervous system
  • Contemplate the garden metaphor and consider how you might live differently with this perspective.

Benefits of this exercise:

This is truly the foundation of a healthy life. Learning to live in a way that honors and balances outer and inner needs is a core principle at the heart of the Pietential Life Balance System. It’s the common thread that runs through Physiological Needs, Safety Needs, Love & Belonging, Self-Esteem, and Self-Actualization, weaving them together in an integrated whole.

When you fully integrate this understanding, whichever category you work with will naturally bear fruit in the others, just like cultivating a healthy garden. This is because they are not actually separate at all. They are just different facets of an integrated whole, the holistic reality of your life journey.

It’s okay to have needs! There is no shame in seeking help from others. In fact, it’s essential for your health and the healthy integration of the wider community. But it’s vital to differentiate between genuine needs (outer or inner) and wants/desires. And it’s also important to distinguish between outer and inner needs—understand how to meet them separately, and know how they support one another.

Excessive self-reliance is harmful to you and the environment, just as much as excessive dependence and exploitation.

Taking this practice to heart will transform your life. You will experience a profound shift in your orientation to the world and other people in the first few months. As you deepen your integration with this practice over the years, you will be better able to see how your wellbeing and that of the whole are intimately connected. Your ability to live in a mutually beneficial way to yourself and others, both outwardly and inwardly, will increase as you see that connection more clearly in all situations and recognize how to act accordingly.

05- Self-Actualization- 81-100%

05- State of Being Not Doing

What you need to begin:

  • 15 to 20 minutes for quiet reflection.

The Steps:

  • It’s so common to define ourselves by what we do.
  • 05S1A: “What do you do?” It’s almost always the first question asked when we meet someone.

  • 05S1B: Some people dread answering this question, afraid they don’t have a good enough answer to justify their existence.
  • 05S1C: Others look forward to it, feeling well prepared with an answer that will impress and perhaps even intimidate whoever they’re speaking to.
  • 05S1D: Why don’t we ask, “Who are you?”
  • 05S1E: It’s so easy to get lost in our busy-ness, especially in our tech-driven modern life, with constant demands on our time and attention.
  • 05S1F: When someone asks how we’re doing, how often do we hear or give the response, “I’m really busy.”
  • 05S1G: The statement is a badge of honor validating our existence, proving we’re making the most of our time and lives, and avoiding deeper inquiry and connection.
  • 05S1H: We can’t be intimate with others because we don’t know how to be intimate with ourselves.
  • 05S1I: An endless stream of doing distracts us from our Be-ing. As a result, we’re exhausted, disconnected from ourselves, and numb to our experience.
  • 05S1J: We don’t really know how we are; if someone asked who we are, we’d have no idea how to answer!
  • Self-Actualization is a state of being, not doing.

  • 05S2A: In this climate, it’s easy to mistake outer accomplishments for Self-Actualization:

  • 05S2B: For example, having a social media following, getting ‘likes,’ making money, making dramatic changes in our life, taking exotic vacations, doing things that win praise and approval (the greater the praise and the larger the circle of people, the better), building a successful business or organization, and owning a home.
  • 05S2C: The above instances or goals are extrinsic in nature, the pursuit of which only takes us further from our Authentic Selves.

  • 05S2D: We’re so busy trying to get outside ourselves and make something happen, escaping our lives and being what we’re not while missing what is happening in the present. We keep ourselves from living life fully.
  • 05S2E: A story about psychologist Abraham Maslow, the developer of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, illustrates this point. His wife Bertha once asked him who was the most self-actualized person he had ever met. Expecting he would name a famous and accomplished person like Albert Einstein, she was surprised when he answered, “Your mother.”
  • 05S2F: Bertha’s mother had been a housewife dedicated to caring for her family her whole life. She was deeply content. Her life was full of meaning, purpose, fulfillment, and love.

05S2G: It’s not what we do that matters; it’s how we do it,

the quality of our inner being.

  • 05S2H: Natural Be-ing is a state of utter simplicity that does not have to be created or manufactured. It’s self-existing—you don’t have to do anything!
  • Now, it’s time to taste the simple fulfillment of your intrinsic Be-ing.

The Be-ing of the world and your Be-ing

are the same Be-ing.

  • 05S3A: It’s not actually “your” being. Everything is Be-ing. So, connect with Be-ing.
  • 05S3B: Ideally, you can do this exercise outside in nature or somewhere there is activity, but somewhere you won’t be interrupted. It’s also fine at home or in a secluded place.
  • 05S3C: Sit quietly with your senses alert. Become aware of your breathing for a few minutes. Let go of distractions and gently bring your attention to your physical sensations and the environment.
  • 05S3D: For a few minutes, notice whatever presents itself to your senses, the sights, sounds, and smells, animate or inanimate. Notice your body’s outer and inner sensations, heartbeat, and breath.
  • 05S3E: Let go of thinking and judging, good/bad, pleasant/unpleasant, right/wrong.
  • 05S3F: Notice the tendency to want to alter or change your environment or move your body. Let go of the need to “do” anything.
  • 05S3G: Now reflect.

All of this happens without you “doing” anything. The world happens; your eyes see, and your ears hear. Your heart beats and body functions.

  • 05S3H: Everything happens on its own without any interference, without needing to be controlled, guided, or manipulated. It’s already complete and sound, just as it is. Nothing needs to be added.

05S3I: You can appreciate and enjoy the completeness of

this simplicity.

  • 05S3J: Human beings did not plan or create themselves. They emerged spontaneously from this. You did not plan or create yourself. There is a natural intelligence in all of this.

4- Contemplate the simplicity and natural intelligence of Be-ing.

  • 05S4A: Ask yourself, “How much do I really need to do? What really needs doing? What purpose does this serve? What is the source of this anxiety to constantly be doing something? Why is it so hard to stop doing and simply be?”
  • 05S4B: Ask yourself, “What is Be-ing calling me to do?”
  • 05S4C: The voice of busy-ness is loud and distracting, calling attention to itself. The voice of Be-ing is soft, confident, and self-contained, almost a whisper. You have to listen closely to hear the voice of Be-ing speak to you.
  • 05S4D: The voice of busy-ness will get quieter once you stop giving it so much attention, and it will be easier to hear the voice of Be-ing.
  • 05S4E: Learn to pay attention and listen for the voice of your True Self.

5- When you connect with the simplicity of being within yourself and realize it isn’t ‘your being,’ you can directly access the intelligence of the greater Be-ing that you are part of.

  • 05S5A: The idea isn’t that you should never do anything again. There are things that need to be done, but doing should arise from Be-ing.
  • 05S5B: Most of our activity isn’t necessary or thoughtful. It’s driven by habit, boredom, anxiety, and fear (of loss, falling behind, and not fitting in). We do so much but never ask why?

05S5C: Do less with more purpose.

  • 05S5D: When Be-ing comes first, doing is guided by the natural intelligence of your being (which is not separate from greater Be-ing) instead of compulsively following unconscious habits.

  • 05S5E: Your activity will be intentional and purposeful instead of being driven by reactive, compulsive busy-ness.

  • 05S5F: Eat when it’s time to eat, sleep when it’s time to sleep, work when it’s time to work, play when it’s time to play, grieve when it’s time to grieve, love when it’s time to love, and help when it’s time to help.

05S5G: You have to slow down.

  • 05S5H: Lower your pace to access the simplicity and intelligence of being and the subtleties of what is happening in and around you. We miss so much in the speed of busy-ness.
  • 05S5I: You have to get comfortable with boredom. Resist the urge to constantly move away from the simplicity of Be-ing into some form of entertainment, to alter or improve your experience in some way.

How to practice over time:

  • Find ten minutes every day to take a break from busy-ness and doing. You can go back to doing soon enough, but for this now, let it go completely. This may seem like a luxury, but it’s a necessary form of genuine self-care.
  • If you have more time or can do this several times a day, that’s great. But ten minutes once a day will be very impactful.
  • Focus on getting in touch with the simplicity of Be-ing, merely being present.
  • Resist the urge to move about or check your phone. Notice how difficult it can be and how strong the urge to move away is. Pay attention to the feelings that come up, like fear, worry, judgment, and boredom. All the things that try to convince you that you’re wasting your time.
  • Deeply examine that resistance. Be curious about it.
  • Contemplate the self-existing, spontaneous quality of things happening independently without your interference. Be curious about that as well.  Appreciate it.
  • As you discover the deep satisfaction and enjoyment of the simplicity of Be-ing, the inertia of busy-ness will gradually diminish on its own.
  • In the beginning, it’s essential to set aside a quiet time dedicated to this reflection. But with more practice, it’s imperative to connect with this quality of simple Be-ing in the middle of activities. Be-ing is always available if you pay attention. Doing simply covers it up and distracts us from it. The purpose of this exercise is to overcome that distraction.

Benefits of this exercise:

It’s an incredible relief to slow down and take the opportunity to experience the simplicity of Be-ing. It brings tremendous freedom from external pressures.

There is satisfaction in Be-ing more that fills the space left by doing less.

You won’t have to struggle to let go of the agitation of doing; you’ll be grateful for it.

Being who you are is the greatest and most rare achievement in life.

Things still need to get done, but instead of internalizing the busy-ness and anxiety of modern life, you’ll be able to decide for yourself what’s really important. You will reclaim and direct your life and energy toward what’s meaningful for you.

Your presence with others will be more settled, solid, stable, and less agitated. You will be confident in knowing who and what you are, regardless of what you do. This will inspire other people to trust their essential being and feel more freedom to step out of busy-ness.

Finally, you’ll be less tempted to do things that aren’t aligned with your Being and better able to sense what your True Self is calling you to do; what has meaning, supports healthy growth, and Self-Actualization.

When you’re in touch with Be-ing as the source of doing, although you may do less, what you do will have more purpose and impact—for yourself and others. You’ll know it is serving the greater good.

You’ll be a more authentic friend, parent, and co-worker. People will value both your Be-ing and your doing.

25- Physiological Needs – 81- 100%(Sai)

25- Spreading Abundance: Generosity is the Antidote to Fear

What you need to begin:

  • 15 minutes for quiet reflection.
  • A desire to serve a purpose greater than your own self-interest and an understanding that your well-being and that of others are interrelated.

The Journey

  • Abundance and generosity are the basis of life, but many people’s lives are dominated by fear and scarcity.

Why?

  • 25S1A: We are conditioned by modern culture to identify with the artificial self, which is defined by a sense of alienation and lack. This disconnects us from the natural abundance of life.
  • 25S1B: Scarcity is an artificial creation of human society. The modern economy actually depends on the illusion of artificial scarcity and lack to function.
  • 25S1C: From earliest childhood, we receive constant messages from society that we are separate from one another and the natural world, and that we are missing something essential to be whole.
  • 25S1D: The result is a near constant state of fear and anxiety (conscious or unconscious) that is reflected in everyone around us. We are all participating in a self-fulfilling, self-reinforcing feedback loop of fear and separation.
  • You can free others from the fear of scarcity by freeing yourself, connecting with abundance, and sharing it through your presence.
  • 25S2A: Connecting with abundance allows you to access the true wealth of inner qualities such as contentment, love, generosity, Self-Esteem, creativity, and feeling of safety.
  • 25S2B: When you share this with others through your presence, it is reassuring, liberating, and enriching. It demonstrates the possibility of a different way of life, liberated from the fear of scarcity. It opens the door to richness beyond material possessions so they can begin to experience these qualities for themselves.
  • 25S2C: Connect with the confidence of natural abundance.
  • 25S2D: Give yourself a few minutes for quiet contemplation.
  • 25S2E: Consider that the world provides everything we need freely, before we claim ownership and put a price on it.
  • 25S2F: The sun shines freely on everyone, everywhere on Earth. We are all surrounded by air, provided freely by nature without restriction. Water is drawn up from the earth, forms clouds, and falls again as rain nourishing life everywhere, in an endless natural cycle. Everything we eat, wear, and make, everything we are, is literally made from the Earth.
  • 25S2G: These basic elements interact with and interpenetrate each other to create ever-changing shapes and manifestations. This is the free-flowing generosity of life. Nature provides everything we need in abundance, naturally, effortlessly, and freely, without coordination or control.
  • 25S2H: You are not separate from the free flow of abundance. You are a part of it!
  •

Reflect on this until you feel some confidence in it

  • 25S2I: You may find it difficult to trust this because it goes against the conditioning of the artificial self. But your authentic self knows it to be true.
  • 25S2J: The more you open to it, the more you will be able to receive and become an expression of it.
  • To embody the natural generosity of abundance, and share it with others through your presence, you have to experience the contrast between scarcity and abundance in your body.
  • 25S3A: “Generosity is symbolized by a wish-fulfilling jewel. The notion of generosity means not holding back but giving constantly. Generosity is self-existing openness, complete openness. You are no longer subject to cultivating your own scheme or project. You reassure others that they don’t have to feel completely tormented and freaked out about their existence.”
  • Chogyam Trungpa
  • 25S3B: Fear and anxiety are experienced in the body as contraction of muscles, claustrophobic tension, and tightening of grip. Generosity and abundance are experienced as a state of openness, relaxation, and letting go.
  • 25S3C: This exercise will help you recognize abundant presence by exaggerating and highlighting the contrast between contraction and relaxed openness.
  • 25S3D: Releasing Contraction
  • 25S3E: Sit quietly for a few minutes. Inhale deeply and hold your breath.
  • 25S3F: Clench your hands tightly while holding your breath. Clench your arms and legs, face and jaw, groin and buttocks, chest and toes, neck and shoulders—the whole body from head to toe.
  • 25S3G: Now all at once, breath out and release the tension throughout your body.
  • 25S3H: Feel the sense of relaxation, freedom, and ease that comes with letting go.  Rest within this openness for 30 seconds or so. Repeat this three times
  • 25S3I: When something triggers fear and scarcity, we automatically react by contracting. This is a biological response that is programmed into our nervous system.
  • 25S3J: If you can notice this contraction, it becomes an opportunity to release into openness. Contraction and holding on become the gateway to the experience of generosity and letting go.
  • Material generosity flows freely from the state of openness that is natural generosity. It doesn’t have to be forced. It can also be a conscious practice to let go of contraction and access openness.

Material generosity and natural generosity support one another.  They are two sides of the same coin.

  • 25S4A: You can connect with the natural generosity of openness first as the foundation for material generosity. Or you can start by practicing material generosity to release contraction and access the state of openness.

25S4B:This simple exercise will help you see how to do that:

The Simplicity of an Open Hand

  • 25S4C: With your palm facing up, hold an object, such as an apple, in your hand.
  • 25S4D: Close your fingers around the object. Hold it tightly for a few seconds.
  • 25S4E: Now, open your fingers and let the object rest freely in your open palm.
  • 25S4F: Repeat this several times, exaggerating the sense of contraction when you close your fingers and releasing into openness when you open your hand.

  • 25S4G: Authentic generosity is simply not holding on.
  • 25S4H: The important part isn’t giving something away. It’s that you are not restricting the flow by holding on. If no one needs the apple, it will stay in your possession without the need to hold onto it. But it’s freely available if someone needs it.
  • 25S4I: The only obstacle to generosity is contraction, holding on. Practicing intentional generosity can reveal your resistance if you notice the contraction.  Without judgment or artificiality, simply use this as an opportunity to release the contraction. This way, material generosity becomes a way of accessing the natural generosity and abundance of your authentic self.
  • 25S4J: The artificial act of giving something away can be counterproductive if it isn’t connected with the experience of spontaneous generosity that comes from natural openness.

How to practice over time:

  • Take a few minutes at the beginning and end of the day to do the exercises in Step 3 (Releasing Contraction) and Step 4 (The Simplicity of an Open Hand).
  • Get familiar with the physical and emotional feeling and contrast between contraction and release in Releasing Contraction.
  • Contraction and release correspond to the closed and open hand in The Simplicity of an Open Hand. Contemplate material generosity as a natural result of not holding on rather than an artificial effort to give something away.
  • Think of situations that make you feel a sense of contraction and do the exercise Releasing Contraction while imagining yourself in those situations.
  • After your morning session, make an effort to notice contraction throughout the day and try to release it.
  • Before your evening session, review your day. Without judgment or criticism, acknowledge whether you were able to release or not. Re-imagine yourself in that situation as you do the exercise again.
  • Gradually, commit to becoming more aware of the experience of contraction.  Don’t worry about figuring out what to do. Focus on how to be by simply releasing into a state of openness.
  • Ultimately, as it becomes second nature, whenever you notice contraction, it will remind you to release. Once you release, you can look at the situation with fresh eyes to see how the situation is inviting generosity to express itself.
  • Practice connecting with openness before you begin any activity, like starting a meeting, going into a store, going to a party, meeting friends, or having a phone call. This is especially important for potentially difficult situations!

All kinds of situations can trigger contraction, so generosity can express itself in countless ways depending on the situation. It could mean holding a door, letting someone go ahead of you in line, or not getting angry when another driver does something you disapprove of. It might be letting someone speak and giving them your full attention or letting someone make a mistake without condemnation. It might simply be letting go of your agenda and trying to control a situation to get the outcome you want. Material generosity, such as giving money or food is only a single, limited expression of generosity. You will notice more possibilities and have many more tools at your disposal when you understand that abundance isn’t limited in that way. Generosity is a state of openness and non-territoriality that can express itself in infinite ways according to each unique situation.

Benefits of this exercise:

The greatest gift anyone can give to another person is to help them connect with and gain confidence in their authentic self. This is where the true wealth of abundance and freedom from the fear and anxiety of scarcity is found.

When others witness your relaxation and freedom from fear through your presence, it helps them see the same possibility for themselves. They can be at more ease in the world and with themselves. You’re not just tending to their Physiological Needs. By sharing your authentic self, you help them connect with their authentic self as well.

Discovering the wholeness and richness of natural abundance transforms life from a fearful, competitive struggle for survival into a journey of Self-Actualization. Once you discover this for yourself, it is natural to share it with others.

As simple as they are, these exercises are a powerful and important step in that direction. Embodying them is a direct way to improve the lives of others.

The emphasis is not on ‘giving’ but on generosity as a state of being, the relaxed and open quality of presence. Giving or not giving is a natural expression of what is appropriate in each situation. From this state of openness, you will discover endless opportunities to practice generosity in countless ways. Every interaction will become an invitation to joyful abundance without struggle.

Your presence in the world will be a source of comfort and liberation for others.  Without pretending or artificially forcing it, your mere presence is generous. You will be planting seeds that can grow into a culture of abundant generosity alleviating the fear of scarcity and separation. As you gain more confidence to live in the natural generosity of inner and outer abundance, others will be inspired to join you and generosity will flow more freely.

Spreading Abundance has the power to transform the lives of individuals and transform the social environment from one of competition and alienation to that of mutual care and flourishing.

Note el dolor debajo de la resistencia.

satisfacer nuestras necesidades internas.

* 22S4B: Factores externos con valor extrínseco nos alejan de nuestro Verdadero Ser y alimentan la adicción. Pero **los factores externos con valor intrínseco** crean una relación saludable con el entorno externo que respalda el bienestar y la autorrealización.

– 22S4C: Las condiciones exteriores e interiores son interdependientes;

– Examinar profundamente esa resistencia.
